General information only

The content of this site is patient education. It describes what produces darkness under the eye, how the kinds are told apart, and what treatment costs in time, recovery and risk. It is not a diagnosis, it is not a treatment recommendation for any individual, and it does not create a doctor-patient relationship.

No substitute for examination

Which of the four kinds is present under your own eyes depends on findings that can only be established by examining you: how the area behaves in two different lights, how the skin moves when it is stretched, what happens when the cheek is lifted, and what the lid and eye surface are doing. Reading this site cannot substitute for that, and a plan made from a website alone is a plan made without information.

Results vary and are not guaranteed

Individual results differ, some treatments work over months rather than weeks, and no clinician and no website can guarantee an outcome. Any statement that appears to promise one should be treated with suspicion wherever you encounter it. The face continues to change after any treatment, and further treatment may be needed later.

If something is wrong after treatment

If you have had treatment to this area and develop rapidly increasing swelling, a tense painful area, spreading redness or fever, bleeding that does not stop, a change in vision, new double vision, or a lump that was not there before, contact the treating team or seek emergency care immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
